NAME: Donkey Kong Country 3-- Dixie Kong's Double Trouble SYSTEM: Super NES MAKER: Rare/Nintendo PRODUCER: A. Collins/Shigeru Miyamoto GENRE: Platform GRAPHICS: 10. The best rendering I've ever seen on the SNES MUSIC: 8. Most of it is very well-orchestrated FUN: 7. Good the first time around, but later on it loses its appeal REPLAY: 5. Getting all the Birds is a drag, and after that there's no reason to play again DIFFICULTY: 7. Krematoa has a huge difficulty factor ENDING: 6. Nothing to jump up and down about STORYLINE: 4. Isn't this the same premise as DKC2...? MULTIPLAYER: 9. One of the best parts of this game. ORIGINALITY: 3. Another Kong Country REALISM: 9. You can almost feel the rock cliffs and steel walls CONTROL: 9. The only problem comes around when you're trying to water-skip MATURITY: 3. One of the stars is even named Kiddy No one saw this coming :). It's a third DKC!! ...And it's just like the first two. You have to understand here that I was only a moderate fan of DKC1, and the challenge of part two completely turned me off. However, the best aspects of the first two have been combined here. The challenge is perfect (number one was way too easy), the control is almost flawless (the hovering in two and mine cart levels in one were frusterating), and the visuals are hands-down the best I've ever seen on the SNES. Also, this game is amazingly fun to play... if you haven't beaten it before. Once that happens, it's little more than an over-priced coaster and an anti-boredom tool at parties (although the two-player co-op mode has gotten me in more than a few fights over who leads and when). And if you liked the first two, get this... but ONLY if you liked BOTH of them. Otherwise, put some serious thought into this. Good for a rental, so you won't ever beat it and spoil other run-throughs. OVERALL: ******* 70% Reviewed on Thanksgiving, 1998
